Internship - SONY Academy
Entry-Level, Contract - Full-time, Administrative/Clerical.
The Sony Music Academy is our newly created intern scheme. Work experience or intern
schemes have always been a successful route to bringing talent into our company. Traditionally, interns in the
company work on an unpaid basis to gain some entry-level experience in the music and entertainment industry.
The Academy consists of four schemes which run alongside each other:

basis.
2) University affiliated interns. We are working together with various universities to introduce interns to
practical experience which complements their studies - part time throughout the academic year.
3) Sandwich/Placement year. Potentially better suited to the support functions; in particular, Finance and IT
where industry placements are part of the degree course.
4) Ad hoc placement of up to three months duration to offer candidates a practical insight into the music and
entertainment business.

skills, strong interpersonal and team skills and an enthusiasm for music.

Considering Work Placement?
Sometimes called an "internship", a work placement role can be a great way of gaining vital music
business work experience. Although most contracts are for a relatively short period (usually no more
than 3 -6 months max) and are generally unpaid (but usually with expenses) they can sometimes lead to
full-time appointments. At the very least, the experience will look good on your CV and should help you
to decide what sort of roles may be suitable for you in the longer term. Being on the inside gives you
a good chance to "get a feel" for the workings of a company.
The first thing to do is decide on the type of organisation you want to approach. Most of the larger
music companies, and a few smaller labels, offer internships as do the BBC. You may have to go on a
waiting list, depending on the time of year you apply, but you can give yourself a better chance of
success if you follow some basic tips:
- Before applying, find out all you can about the company - what they do, how successful they are, what
their culture is etc. Check their website and try to talk to existing or past employees. It will
impress your potential employer if you can demonstrate some knowledge and a keen interest in their
business.
- Write a simple, clear covering letter (no more than one page) laying out what role you are applying
for, why you would be suitable and why you've chosen their company. Give a brief outline of any
relevant interests/experience you may have. Be sure to get the contact details of the person
responsible for hiring staff and address your letter accordingly.
- Keep your CV updated and, wherever possible, tailor it to the company you send it to e.g. highlight
your love of a particular music style if it's relevant to the employer in question. This is where your
knowledge of, or research into, the company comes into play.
- Concentrate on no more than 5 or 6 companies to start with and if you can manage to personalise each
application to the individual company, yours is going to stand out from the bunch.
- Remember, holiday periods (summer, Christmas etc) are usually the best times to apply, but it will
vary depending on the company's own recruitment policy. |
